A PREVIEW to MALHAAR 22 July 2010

The first of our inter-school events for each session, Malhaar which started out as a Music and Dance competition has evolved into a veritable celebration of the fine arts and technology with the inclusion of two new disciplines- computer animation and art.

As always the theme for the year is woven into the theme of each event and as we traverse the Silk Route we invite you to travel on it with us through music and dance, art and computer animation. This year The Indian School is hosting this event on the 22 July and as always we expect participation from many schools of repute who have consistently participated in this competition. As always, too, we do not intend to vie for the rolling trophy but will give it away to the school adjudged the ‘best’.

We are privileged indeed to have Padma Vibhushan Sm. Sonal Mansingh as our Chief Guest for the occasion, and a panel of distinguished judges, each acclaimed in his/her own field to assess the various disciplines.

Linked as it is with our theme for the year “The Silk Route”: the music, the dances, the paintings and the themes selected for computer animation will reflect the fascinating explorations, innovation and discoveries that linked the civilizations of different regions from the Far Eastern countries to the Mediterranean; from Eurasia to the South Asian region for over 3,000 years.

Since its inception in 2004-05, wherein Malhaar had classical music as its theme,24 participating schools, and Padmabhushan Pt. Debu Chaudhury as the Chief Guest , it has become an annual feature which reflects our school’s theme for the year. Through the years 2005-2009 prominent Delhi schools have participated in the competition with themes ranging from folk music and dance, an event presided over by Padmabhushan Vidushi Shovana Narayan; Kathak and ghazals representing the Mughal era with well known Kathak exponent Guru Rajendra Gangani as the Chief Guest, to a theme inspired by the rich cultural heritage of North-East India with legendary Manipuri exponent Rajkumar Singhajit Singh as the Chief Guest. Minister Counsellor of the European Union, Mr.Itienne Clayee presided over our competition based on the European Masters in which 17 schools expressed themselves through the flavours of European dances and music. However, it was our competition of 2009 based on “Dilli Meri Jaan” which saw the highest level of participation, featuring 33 schools, as Malhaar evolved further with the introduction of art and technology in the competition.
